‘Every single time you help somebody stand up, you are helping humanity rise.” – Steve Maraboli

Hello everyone! This week, our stories highlight the many people around the world who are ‘helping humanity rise’. Residents in East Cleveland are building a closed-loop economy to support the community well-being. A Scottish trauma surgeon developed a way to use virtual reality to repair shattered bones. And, in Canada, a ten-dollars-a-day government-initiated child care system is implemented.  All around us, just like ripples that extend out in the water, new endeavors are taking shape and contributing to positive change. May we remember how impactful the smallest action can be. Wishing you well!

Trauma Surgeon Uses VR To Fix Shattered Bones

Trauma Surgeon Uses VR To Fix Shattered Bones

After David Howie and his daughter got a VR headset for Christmas, the Scottish trauma surgeon found a way for virtual reality technology to help repair shattered bones. "I suddenly thought, hang on, we should be able to view CT scans using this same technology and there must be clever people who have already created the software." He discovered several versions of the software and chose one, and NHS Lanarkshire's IT staff joined in to develop the project. Now doctors at University Hospital, Wishaw are using VR headsets to view high-tech 3D images of complex injuries so they can plan more precise surgery. His team then developed a way to rehearse complex procedures outside the operating theater, a process that has transformed complicated operations. Surgeons at NHS Lanarkshire believe the low-cost system can help other orthopedic surgeons. Read Full Story.

Loiter

Wake Robin Fermented Foods is at the leading edge of a larger vision to establish a community-owned supply chain in East Cleveland, one of Ohio's poorest cities. It was the first purchase by Loiter, which was co-founded in 2021 by Ismail Samad with the goal of building an intentionally regenerative and circular economy. Wake was Loiter's first purchase, in partnership with the nonprofit Food Depot to Health, to ensure predictable revenue streams to East Cleveland urban farmers. Working with the Chocolate Rebellion, which supports ethically sourced chocolate from black cocoa farmers around the world, Loiter has broken ground on a craft chocolate production center. "I want to be able to say that we own the narrative, while owning assets, while owning businesses that will be the future anchors of a city-wide change," Ismail says. "We can be part of the change that we've been longing for." Read Full Story.

Naiyozcsia King, the Ohio-based soul food magnate, melted hearts recently by settling a $411.15 lunch debt at Donovan Elementary School. A rule stating that students with overdue lunch accounts couldn't participate in "Ice Cream Friday" sparked an icy response online. The critics' outrage got King's attention, compelling her to step into the fray. After praying for guidance, she reached out to the school, offering to pay the full debt amount. King later confessed to being a parent with a past lunch debt herself, and so she could relate. The school district acknowledged their original post's insensitivity, an unintentional message, and apologized. The generous act of King ensures students can enjoy "Ice Cream Friday" without monetary hindrances. Read Full Story.
