The US State Department has created a new program, called the Welcome Corps, that allows groups of Americans to become direct sponsors of refugees who are eligible for resettlement in the US. Sponsor groups can help refugees with basic needs such as housing for the first three months of their arrival. In mid-2023, sponsors will also be able to refer refugee resettlement cases to the State Department. The government hopes that the Welcome Corps program will not only boost the number of refugees admitted in the US, but also reduce financial burdens on the government since groups of private individuals will be raising money to support the refugees.
