The Southeast side of Chicago was once at the center of the U.S. steep production. The location was ideal with its wetlands providing an easy place to dump waste. Steel production came at a cost - children became asthmatic and marshes were filled with slag. Non-profits like Urban Growers Collective are leading efforts to reverse the harm. UGC runs the South Chicago Farm, an urban farm located within Clara Schaffer Park. The farm offers farm-fresh food and teaches farm skills to the community. It has greenhouses, a community garden, an orchard, plant beds, and goats. The food produced on the farm gets distributed to the community by a bus, "a produce aisle on wheels," that goes to underserved communities.
