In 2019, London Mayor Sadiq Khan established the world’s first 24-hour Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) in central London to protect the city’s residents from air pollution, and two years later, expanded it to include inner London. The ULEZ imposed £12.50 fines on vehicles whose emissions exceeded certain standards. Now, a new peer-reviewed report finds the policy has paid off, although the ULEZ is not the only thing that has helped reduce pollution. Khan has announced plans to expand the ULEZ to cover all London boroughs by Aug. 29, 2023, despite concerns of 11 outer London councils. “Many cities in the UK and around the world are looking to follow London’s lead,” said air pollution expert Dr. Gry Fuller. “I hope that the evidence here will improve the design of similar schemes more widely.”
