Isabelle Champagne, 15, was frozen with nerves the night before racing at the Canada Winter Games. Her coach messaged Isabelle Weidemann, winner of gold, silver and bronze medals at the Olympics, for advice. She replied with a big, long note filled with stories of her own challenges, her own lessons and advice on how to approach things. Champagne saw it the next day, after she stepped to the line and swallowed her nerves and skated to her first gold. ‘Sport is always a risk. It’s why we race. We never know what’s going to happen. We can’t control the outcome, because we can never control what others do. So the only thing we’re going to do is our best, that’s it, that’s all, and the rest of it you cannot control. We’re always willing to risk losing for the chance to win.’
