Kiin Hasan Fakat’s dream of becoming a journalist began at 10, listening to veteran correspondent Asha Ibrahim Aden of the Voice of America’s Somail service while living with her family in Daadab refugee camp in northern Kenya. Today she is part of Somalia’s first all-women news outlet, Bilan, launched last April and supported by the UN Development Program. It has brought together six highly qualified female Somali journalists, each with years of experience writing news or broadcasting on radio stations or local TV. Bilan's stories have already had an impact locally and internationally. In October, an in-depth article in the Guardian helped raise alarm about Somalia’s looming humanitarian crisis and famine.
