Advancements in Artificial Intelligence are delivering breakthroughs in breast cancer detection, although additional clinical trials are needed before it can be more widely adopted as an automated second or third reader of breast cancer screens. Kheiron Medical Technologies trained its MIA system using more than five million historical mammograms of patients whose diagnoses were already known. Last year, after a test on more than 275,000 breast cancer cases, Kheiron said its A.I. software matched the performance of human radiologists when acting as the second reader of scans. Its technology was first used on patients in 2021 in Hungary, and in 22 cases, the A.I. identified a cancer missed by radiologists. Scotland’s National Health Service will use it as an additional reader at six sites, England’s National Health Service will use it in about 30 sites, and Oulu University Hospital in Finland plans to use it. A bus will travel around Oman to perform screenings using A.I.
