There will be more electric buses on the streets of El Paso, Texas, thanks to extremely popular federal funding programs under the 2021 Bipartisan Infrastructure law. The Socorro Independent School District, which transports 6,000 of its more than 48,000 students in 295 buses each school day, got $9.8 million for 25 electric buses and infrastructure under the Clean Bus Program. It was one of 13 Texas school districts awarded $50 million in 2022 funding to purchase 144 electric buses. El Paso’s public transportation entity, Sun Metro, got $8.8 million from the Federal Transit Administration in August 2022 to invest in electric buses. The city of El Paso matched $2.2 million for a total cost of about $11 million, to buy 50 zero-emission paratransit vehicles, install 25 electric charging stations, and hire and train existing employees.
