A Syrian refugee has won an election to become mayor of the municipality of Ostelheim in southwest Germany. “Today, Ostelsheim sent an example for broad-mindedness and cosmopolitanism for the whole of Germany,” he said, according to German public broadcaster ZDF. “That’s not something that can be taken for granted.” Ryyan Alshebl came to Germany eight years ago, fleeing the civil war in Syria. His election was welcomed by the majority of the population of Ostelheim, helping to overcome stereotyping and prejudice.
