It was the third-to-last day of the school year, and Imunek Williams was waiting for a red light to change when she began smelling smoke. She was only a mile from the Milwaukee charter school where she drops off students but pulled to the curb and told the 37 students to get off the bus. She called emergency services from the sidewalk even as the heater erupted in flames. Firefighters soon arrived and put out the flames but the fire destroyed the windows and front door. Another bus took the students to school, and a friend drove Williams to Aurora Health Care, where doctors checked her and the baby’s health and found they were healthy. The next morning, Williams drove a new school bus to pick up students.
