A new federal program in Canada, called the NWAC National Apprenticeships Program (NAP), is intending to sign up 4,000 female Indigenous apprentices within two years. Lauralea Eldridge, NAP national engagement coordinator, is offering Indigenous women and the Indigenous LGBTQIA+ community 1:1 support for applicants seeking new jobs. Canada's federal government is also offering financial support, including specialized loans, grants, apprenticeship offers and tax credits and deductions for Indigenous women looking to go into trades. According to Don Wall, the author of this article, Eldridge believes that mentorship is a huge contributor to the success of this program. Connecting with applicants as a mentor, being a liaison or advocate helps Indigenous women and the Indigenous LGBTQIA+ community get to the point where they are ready to work as an apprentice within the trade industry.
