In early 2022, during Russia's invasion of Ukraine, Ajax Systems, a Ukrainian company known for intrusion and fire-detection technology, with the suggestion of a software developer named Stepan Tanasiychuk, created a more efficient alert system for incoming air raids. Together, they build a minimalist app. By March 1, the app, called Air Alert, was up and running in five regions, and within a month, it covered the entire country. The Air Alert app has been downloaded more than 15 million times and is credited with reducing civilian casualties during the war. Research showed that the app significantly impacted saving lives. The collaboration with regional administrations and the Ministry of Digital Transformation allowed for the rapid expansion of the app's coverage. To raise awareness and funds, the company partnered with actor Mark Hamill, who provided his voice as Luke Skywalker from Star Wars for the app's alerts. Despite the seriousness of the situation, Ajax believes that adding humor to the app is essential in providing a public service. As the war continues, the app and the company's efforts have provided meaning and a positive impact during a chaotic and terrifying time for Ukraine.
