A group of friends in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, US, raised more than $17,000 to erase medical debt for about 1,700 residents. Working with nonprofit RIP Medical Debt, the funds raised were used to purchase and forgive $1.6 million in medical debt. The fundraising friends then held a debt-burning party at the city’s Chicken Pier to celebrate their achievement. The beneficiaries will receive letters by mid-September letting them know their debt is forgiven. “I hope that for each of them, it brings some comfort and relief to know that we are there for them. I’m so proud that it’s this wild group of mostly queer Philly people that made it happen,” said one of the group.
