Migrants walk on foot towards their home, without food and at times denied wages by their employers. But, like the snake-and-ladder game, sooner or later they are apprehended by police, and then a bus drives them back to their starting point. The problem is too big for any one government and civil society, leave alone individual. Yet, through our small acts, in whatever capacity, we can make a difference. Sangeeta, a renowned Bharatnatyam dancer, through her dance, aids in education, empowerment and conflict across communities. During lockdown, she along with her group, has distributed food, listened to migrants stories, comforted them, offering food, money, any other support.State Machinery is overburdened leading to negligence, apathy, even antipathy. By being a witness and highlighting the problems, volunteers have helped improve food and hygiene across shelter homes in Chennai. They register people, connect them to nodal officers, aid in translation, match trains, follow up if they have received sms. Simple compassionate acts like actively listening to their pains, reassuring them that they are not alone, giving food, water and money may just be a drop in the ocean. But the ocean would be less because of that missing drop.
