Murugan spent his childhood begging for food, picking leftovers from waste, till police shifted him to an orphanage. Inspired from social reformers like Mother Teresa, Murugan developed urge to give back to society. He has been attached to abandoned persons with mental health issues. During the pandemic, when most people remain ensconced in their homes practicing social distancing, Murugan, through his NGO Theruvoram (meaning 'street' in Malyalam), has rescued over 600 destitute and homeless from Kerala streets. Many of those rescued are addicted to drugs and alcohol, and suffer from mental illness. The NGO survives through donations and has 2 ambulances which come in handy to give those rescued a bath and shift them to hospitals. Murugan's service has been recognized and applauded by many including both the President and the Prime Minister of India.
