The Smart Materials research group at the Italian Institute of Technology (IIT) has pioneered a groundbreaking solution for burn treatment -- an eco-friendly bandage crafted from plant-based materials. Laden with Vitamin C, this innovative bandage promises accelerated healing for burn wounds. Beyond burns, its potential extends to diverse skin injuries, heralding a sustainable alternative to conventional skin patches. Crafted from zein, pectin, and soy lecithin, the bandage's porous texture facilitates the gradual release of Vitamin C, combating inflammation and oxidative stress. Laboratory tests on human skin cells underscore its biocompatibility and efficacy in reducing inflammatory markers and oxygen free radicals. Preclinical studies confirm its inflammation-reducing properties, affirming its role in expediting healing. Researchers envision broader applications, aligning with circular economy principles by exploring food waste-derived materials. Spearheaded by Athanassia Athanassiou, the project underscores a paradigm shift in wound care, offering hope for millions affected by skin injuries.
