91-year-old Sam Sloan has been working and saving money since he was 20, but after retiring, he began giving it away. He settled on helping out the nearby volunteer fire department in rural Calhoun, Missouri. When Mark Hardin became fire chief in December of 2021, they had one volunteer and no working equipment. While they now have 29 volunteers, they were struggling on a $4,800 US annual budget, relying on donated equipment from other departments, and even covering costs themselves. But when Sloan gave Hardin a check for $500,000, it meant that they could buy new trucks and uniforms. The firefighters presented Sloan with his very own firefighter helmet that says "Honorary fire chief’, and when the new gear arrives, they’ll celebrate together with a barbecue.
