Kakamega Forest, Kenya’s last patch of tropical rainforest, is only a remnant of the Guineo-Congolian rainforest that once spanned the African continent. But some local community members and grassroots organizations In Shinyalu, a small township which suffered the most tree cover loss from 2001 to 2022, are scrambling to preserve what’s left of their dwindling forest. For 82-year-old seer Clement Shiramba, who lives in Shinyalu, the forest and his work are intertwined. Seers like him follow careful systems for foraging for roots, leaves and berries, taking no more than what their patients need. Their work is opening eyes to the gifts within such living pharmacies and encouraging people to protect the remaining swath of their forest.
