In a feminist bookshop in Madrid, 17 women are adding biographies of women to WIkipedia. They are part of Wikiesfera, a community dedicated to publishing content focused on women. “For the first time, civil society has the power to make women visible,” says founder Patricia Horrillo, who created the group a decade ago after wondering why people weren’t contributing more to sites like Wikipedia. The focus on women emerged in parallel as Horrillo seized on the idea of tackling Wikipedia’s gender gap, allowing her to merge her passions of technology and activism. “If you start to ask what can I do to change the world, the answer is a bit complicated. But this is something that is within our grasp.”
