Freelance photographer Dylan Heuer, who became deaf at 7 months old and received a cochlear implant at 3, has had a powerful impact on several baseball clubs. Heuer started the week-long Iowa Baseball Camp for the Deaf (IBCD) in 2015 because children who are deaf or hard of hearing have difficulty accessing Little League. The week-long camp is free and operates entirely on donations. When they celebrate Deaf Culture Night at Principal Park in Des Moines, the Iowa Cubs will wear special jerseys with “Iowa” in American Sign Language. In Chicago, the major league Cubs partnered with nonprofit Kulture City to open a sensory room at Wrigley Field in April, and introduced closed captioning last season. The Chicago Cubs will host a Deaf inclusive night on Sept. 19.
