Braced for the “bark and the bite” he usually heard from Principal Carrie, school counselor David was astounded when she sounded kind, even cheerful. Carrie was finishing a year of engagement in emotionally intelligent leadership coaching through the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence. She learned to practice emotional regulation techniques and model them for others. She got more sleep, cut down on sugar, and walked 10 minutes a day -- strategies set out in the Center’s new book, "Emotional Intelligence for School Leaders". Summarizing them: Check in with your emotions regularly -- and honor them. Regulate your emotions. Establish clear boundaries and stick to them. Listen with empathy and without judgment. Reflect often. Nurture your relationships. Model for others.
