Artist Elizabeth Stanley faced an existential crisis when a deadly infection left her without her hands. She became ill while on vacation, was taken to the hospital, and placed in an induced coma for 10 days, during which her organs shut down. Upon awakening, her arms and legs turned black from sepsis. All told, her brush with meningococcal led to four amputations: her left hand was partially amputated and her right hand and both feet were completely amputated. “As you can imagine, for an artist, having your dominant hand amputated meant rethinking everything I was going to do in relation to art," Stanley said. She has learned to paint again and her art is more free and expressive than it used to be. While the change in her style was a hard to shift to make, it has allowed her to continue with her passion, painting. Her work still includes her signature use of color to convey mood and emotion. “I know that art is my purpose in life. I’ll always be an artist,” she said.
