Le Présage, which claims to be the first completely solar restaurant in Europe, opened its doors on 18 June in Marseille, France. Its kitchen is powered by the sun's energy captured through two large parabolic dishes whose beams are directed onto the kitchen stoves. Le Présage (whose name translates as The Omen) is open Monday to Friday only at lunchtime. Its founders describe it as a guinguette - an open-air taverns near a river where Parisians spent their weekends. In recent years guinguettes are being revived with modern twists. A low wall inside the building, made partly from earth recovered from the site, stores the heat from the sun's rays. Le Présage plans to begin growing its own herbs and some vegetables.
