A substantial 55-foot solar-electric sailing catamaran has been unveiled by German yacht design and engineering studio iYacht GmbH. Named Hu’chu 55, the firm claims the vessel represents a significant leap forward in eco-friendly design. Its body is derived from over 90 percent scrap metal. The aluminum developed especially for the Yacht utilizes scrap from license plates, road signs, cosmetic cans, and more. The firm claims the aluminum sheet’s CO2 footprint is reduced to under 2 kg CO2/kg, just one-eighth of the market average. The boat also uses recycled cork, salvaged wood, and natural fabrics. These materials were selected because they are environmentally friendly and circular: using recycled and recovered materials closes the loop, lowers trash production and gives these materials a second chance at life. The vessel boasts ample battery capacity, which can be recharged via solar panels and hydrogeneration.
