Setting up a community water project with a solar-powered pumping system means 80 peasant families of the Salvadoran village of El Rodeo now have drinking water in their homes. Clean drinking water was families' main goal when they returned home after the Salvadoran civil war ended in February 1992. The water was purchased from the owner of a nearby spring for US$5,000, with funds from international organizations. Families pay $5 for about 10 cubic meters per month, equivalent to 10,000 liters. Water is available two days a week from 9:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., weather permitting. The project also included composting latrines, and a filter in each house that filters gray water to irrigate small vegetable gardens or “bio-gardens”.
