When Sherri McKinlay took fruit to the fire crew about 10 kilometers from Ashcroft, British Columbia, on July 21, it set off a big community effort. Discovering that not all firefighters had food during the day, Sherri and Tova White began organizing. St. Alban's Anglican Church rallied volunteers who provide the church’s weekly Soup's On by-donation lunch, and donations poured in. Lunch bags are filled with two sandwiches each, fresh fruit, baked goods, granola bars, jerky, trail mix, juice boxes, chips, hydrating drink powder, and chewing gum, and specially requested items including Advil, cough drops, and eyedrops. The crews go through socks faster than they can wash them, so every bag also contains a pair. Volunteers have been preparing up to 70 bags a day, and will continue as long as there's a need.
