Natalia Méndez, 54, has no doubt that the thousands of migrants who have arrived in New York City over the last two years need to eat stew, just as she knew how, during the pandemic, New Yorkers needed to eat root soup. They distributed 5,000 canteens in a week. In 2009, Méndez and her husband rented the space where La Morada is located today and after years of backbreaking work, the restaurant offering meals between $3 and $20 was born. La Morada is supported by what they sell to some customers, tips left by diners, community contributions to a GoFundMe campaign, universities that hire their catering services, organizations that support them with some donations, as well as other funds that take part in “mutual aid.”
