Homeowners are opting to "re-wild", incorporating native plants and decreasing lawn to make their properties more sustainable and encourage natural ecosystems to recover, says Plan It Wild, a New York-based native landscape design company. About 30% of the water an average American family consumes is used outdoors, including watering lawns and gardens. In the West, where water is absorbed almost immediately, outdoor water usage can increase to an average of 60% for the average family. Native vegetation requires much less maintenance, including little beyond normal rainfall. When Jane Balter moved into her home in Mount Kisco, New York, she began re-wilding four years ago and says deer, fox, coyote, birds and insects now venture into her yard.
