Drones are providing new and safer ways to detect and clear land mines in Ukraine. Ukrainians have been testing mine-seeking drones equipped with infrared cameras, magnetometers and neural network analysis since last year. It is also developing a system with the American data analytics company Palantir that will use AI to study which lands should be demined first. Allies are contributing to a $110 million fund for technical assistance and training for military transport units, emergency services and the National Guard, and at least 92 demining machines are currently clearing land. A coalition of NATO states will provide Ukraine with equipment and training, and the European Union will fund 16 Belgian Malinois ordnance-sniffing dogs to new mine-disposal teams. Engineers at the US Army’s Combat Capabilities Development Command have developed mine-detection software that relies on drone imaging and are working on a hand-held scanner that can create a map of where the explosives are located.
