Jibran Gulzar had no idea that instead of moving to London to pursue a master’s degree in 2019, he would found Gatoes, a food delivery app that works with limited internet connectivity in Jammu and Kashmir, a region notorious for government-mandated internet shutdowns. The idea was born out of a curfew and internet blackout imposed on the region in 2019. When internet service was restored in December 2019, Gulzar worked with developers in Chandigarh and Delhi to make an app that works at 2G internet speed. In early 2021, once 4G internet services resumed, Gatoes rapidly expanded. It delivers to more than 45,000 customers a month, receives around 1,600 orders per day, lists over 1,200 restaurants and cafes, works with more than 200 delivery workers, and has 50 full-time employees. Jammu and Kashmir is one of the world’s most dangerous territorial conflicts between India, Pakistan, and China.
