Students and parents at Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Academic Middle School won't have to go far to get groceries thanks to a new free store inside the school sponsored by Amazon, food startup Goodr, and the YMCA of Greater San Francisco. The store will operate weekly throughout the school year for about 75 families in the YMCA-managed Beacon program. The San Francisco Unified School District already has meal programs, but the new store lets the district "help families and students outside of school as well," said district Superintendent Matt Wayne. MLK Middle School principal Tyson Fetcher said access to healthy foods will improve outcomes for students and strengthen relationships between families and the school.
