Calgary-based scientist Dr. Kristina Rinker is receiving financial backing from the US military to carry out breast cancer research jointly with Cornell University researcher Dr. Massimo Cristofanilli. The award of approximately C$3 million from the US Department of Defense will expand clinical testing for a blood test that can detect early-stage breast cancer. The Syantra DX Breast Cancer molecular lab test has received laboratory accreditation in Canada, the US and Europe. The funding will support a three-year, 2,000-participant clinical study to further test women’s blood for breast cancer, at six sites around the US and in Manchester, England. "It can be hard to deploy screening programs around the world in remote locations, so blood tests have come about as an interesting possibility to fill this gap,” Rinker said.
