One in nine K-12 schools in the US now use solar energy to power their buildings, and over 6.2 million K-12 students attend a school that uses solar power, says a report by Generation180. The nation’s K-12 schools currently generate 1,814 megawatts of cumulative solar capacity, enough to power the electricity of all 330,000+ households in Denver, Colorado. Wayne County Public Schools in West Virginia is installing 10,000 solar panels, which will save $6.5 million over 25 years - enough to fund three additional teachers for their careers. In North Carolina, the net positive energy building at Tar Heel School in Bladen County generates more onsite clean electricity than it consumes and the school uses the building as a teacher to get students excited about green careers.
