In Southern Minneapolis, Camp Nenookaasi is pushing local elected officials to decriminalize safe outdoor encampments, keep evictions to a minimum, and protect residents’ rights and dignity during necessary evictions. Since August 2023, its volunteers have housed over 250 people and sent around 50 people to treatment. The Autonomous Yurt Union raised money to build 20 yurts, each of which cost around $400 to make, and led an ongoing series of Build Days where anyone can learn to construct them. In the past year, the AYU has built, deployed, and repaired over 100 yurts for encampments across the city. Members can help residents deconstruct the yurts in about 10 minutes, and the yurts can go from camp to camp to camp for months.
