Now an innovative technology known as regenerative braking is powering trains, inverters and EV chargers. One third of the energy powers the trains, with the rest powering station amenities and what will be a network of seven ultra-fast chargers. When all 16 inverters are in place, it will save about 3,885 metric tons of CO2 emissions annually. The $8.6 million (7.8 million euros) MetroCHARGE project cost will be recouped in four to five years through energy savings and revenue from the charging stations, where drivers pay about 33 cents per kilowatt-hour.
