Greetings cards from across Canada and as far away as Australia filled the mailbox of Donovan Nixon, 102, a decorated Second World War veteran who lives in Langford, British Columbia, on his birthday Sept. 17 and on Remembrance Day. Without telling him, Marlene Graham had posted an appeal on social media. They became friends after Nixon befriended Graham’s aunt, 89-year-old Glenda Graham, who also lives in Cherish. One story Nixon shares often is about returning from a flight during the Second World War when a rattling noise was heard in one of his bomber’s wing fuel tanks. Inside, they found an unexploded incendiary shell. “There were times when I thought I'll never reach 18 years of age,” says Nixon. “I was very lucky.”
