Swiss architect Jacques Herzog says hospitals do not have to be the ugliest places in the world. And the proof lies in Zurich’s new children’s hospital. The Kinderspital has been conceived as a town, with different departmental neighborhoods leading off a main street which spills on to side streets and squares. The 200 patient rooms have been imagined as little wooden 'cottages' around the top floor. There are big picture windows and window seats that can be pulled out to become beds, giving weary parents a place to sleep. Porthole windows at child height can be opened for natural ventilation, and every room has an en suite bathroom.
