Twice a week, cyclists hand out prepared meals to unhoused people in Austin, Texas. Austin Bicycle Meals carry coolers of water and food in to-go containers. It began in 2022, when Kelly Wourms and Claire Harbutt began making 50 sack lunches to hand out each weekend. The idea came from a volunteer group, Bicycle Meals, that delivers meals around Koreatown in Los Angeles, where Wourms used to live. After roughly five months, they partnered with Austin Food Not Bombs to distribute hot meals, and Our Shared Kitchen, to prepare nutritionally balanced meals for a wide range of people. Today, ABM hands out roughly 500 meals a month, and is aiming to distribute 9,000 meals in 2025.
