Fifth grader Eniola Shokunbi led efforts at her school, Commodore MacDonough STEM Academy in Middletown in Connecticut, to create an air filter system that’s able to remove cold and COVID viruses from classrooms. “Eniola is fabulous,” State Senator Matt Lesser said. “She wows every room she’s in front of. She’s a real rock star.” The filters were built and installed by Shokunbi and classmates. Students also worked closely with scientists and the University of Connecticut, designing a filter system that costs $60 per unit. Recently, Shokunbi was in the room as the State Bond Commission approved $11.5 million for the construction and installation of the air filter system for other schools in the state.
