The story of how a long time customer of a Chicago bakery discovered that the woman who ran it was his biological mother is a truly incredible story of family reconnection. At least once a week, Vamarr Hunter walked down the street to the Give Me Some Sugah bakery for breakfast or a treat. Hunter, 50, was a loyal customer for several years before discovering in March 2022 that bakery owner Leonore Lindsey was his birth mother. Lindsey gave birth to Hunter in 1974, when she was 17 but Hunter didn’t learn he was adopted til 35. He got in touch with Gabriella Vargas, a genetic genealogist based in California, who identified Lindsey as his mother. That same day, Lindsey reached out to Hunter. Shortly after they reunited, Lindsey had a stroke and Hunter stepped up to help her manage the bakery, which Lindsey had opened in 2008. In April, Hunter quit his job to run the bakery full-time with his mother.
