Seventeen days after Hurricane Helene devastated Western North Carolina, the non profit Footprint Project was working to replace noisy generators with batteries charged with solar panels. Footprint partners with local solar companies, nonprofits and others, to deploy solar-powered charging stations, water filtration systems, and other climate tech to communities who need it most. The group has now built nearly 50 solar-powered microgrids in the region. With climate-fueled weather disasters poised to increase, Footprint hopes to entice the biggest players in disaster relief to use solar microgrids. As for Footprint equipment, the dream is to create “lending libraries” that can be cycled in and out of community events and disaster relief.
