More than three-quarters of UK universities have pledged to exclude fossil fuel companies from their investments. The campaign group People & Planet said 115 out of 149 UK universities had committed to divest – meaning £17.7bn-worth of endowments (roughly 21 billion US dollars). People & Planet, which set up the Fossil Free universities campaign in 2013, said Birmingham City University, Glasgow School of Art, Royal Northern College of Music and University of Bradford had incorporated fossil fuel exclusions into their investment policies. Later this month, the group will unveil its latest table that ranks institutions by their ethical and environmental performance and then increase pressure on the remaining 34 UK universities to go fossil-free.
