The flier on the bulletin board at Central California Women’s Facility B Yard said “FARMER’S MARKET to be held for B Yard, September 28, 2024.” Incarcerated people rarely have access to fresh produce, and Insight Garden Program, which provides vocational gardening training and other programming at California prisons, says no California state prison has ever held a farmer’s market before. IGP provided 1,000 lbs of produce, some donated by Fresno farmers. Each person could claim an equal share by exchanging their tickets for produce. At the flower booth, the last of five booths, each incarcerated person received a small handmade bouquet.
