“It’s a bag of flour,” nine-year-old Ivy Zhao announced as her Grade 4/5 class at Connaught Heights Elementary in New Westminster picked up donations for the school’s annual food collection drive. All eight classes fanned out to homes and businesses over roughly 20 square blocks. Inside the Surrey Christmas Bureau, a charity that provides low-income families with toys and food, 16-year-olds from Guildford Park Secondary guided parents around a store they set up full of items donated by the community. The store will serve about 2,300 needy families from Surrey — including more than 6,000 kids — this year.
