Orlando Science School high schooler Tiffani Gay has invented a solution that could improve the lives of people with vision loss. Her headset sends vibrational warnings to communicate obstacles — and she’s setting the price tag at $200. It uses LiDAR sensors — laser-based technology implemented in most modern cars — to identify and categorize objects. In total, Gay created 25 iterations before submitting her latest model to STEM competitions around the world. She finished fourth at the Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair and won gold at the Taiwan International Science Fair. Her next big project: an electromagnetic system that can protect animals from oil spills by separating oil from water. She also is a mentor with Girls Who Code, which teaches STEM skills to young girls.
