Humanitarian architect Cameron Sinclair, who lost his house in the ongoing wildfires in LA, shares some practical immediate advice. Don't wait for help: buy sturdy shovels, masks, boots and gloves. Figure out your loss. Organize by each room. Save receipts. Prioritize getting replacements of any important documents that were lost. Call all of your utilities and either freeze or cancel service. Get storage. Register for emergency housing, and register with all the agencies (FEMA and state) and large aid organizations. Call homeowners' insurance to trigger Loss of Use. Search for a long-term rental. Get a PO box for the many forms you will fill out. Figure out permits for debris removal, erosion control, temporary power, trailer on site. Beware of fake contractors and insurance scam artists.
