When Tsah Yahav’s dozen workers began to deconstruct a former military hospital on a three-hectare site near Grenoble, in southeast France, they used handheld tools.The site, known as Le Cadran Solaire (The Sundial), is being transformed into a mixed-use site and had been earmarked by regional authorities to salvage as much material as possible. In the end 320 metric tons of material were collected, including 50 metric tons of tiles and 70 metric tons of wood, reducing the CO2 emissions by 373 metric tons of carbon. Of the 12 full-time employees hired, six were hired permanently. Ecomat 38 has since been involved in dozens of other deconstruction projects in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, and has opened a permanent store for sales of reclaimed materials.
