Women goat herders in Ovalle, in northern Chile, are confronting climate change by improving the quality and variety of their products. Encouraged by international awards for their cheeses, they have adapted to severe and prolonged drought that pushes herders toward raising goats in stables or corrals, partially breaking the traditional itinerant grazing system. In November 2024, Yasna Molina took part in the World Cheese Awards in Viseu, Portugal, a competition with over 4,500 cheeses and a jury of 250 technical experts and tasters. Her award has energized other goat herders. Meanwhile, goat science specialist Claudia Torres, deputy director of the Center for Arid Zone Studies at the Faculty of Agronomic Sciences of the University of Chile, is preparing an application to the National Institute of Intellectual Property to grant designation of origin to all white, semi-fat, and fresh goat cheese produced in Ovalle.
