
On the day she finally took action against her abusive partner, she went to the bank. She was among the 241 people who used one of the 1,849 Safe Spaces in a U.K. bank between April and December 2024. An initiative of the UK domestic abuse support charity Hestia, Safe Spaces began when banks and pharmacies were among the few places people could still visit during covid. At last count, there are 4,449 Safe Spaces across the UK. In the US, there are about 1,500 Safe Places, run by domestic violence support organization PurpleOne, where people can get information and be connected to their local state-recognized domestic violence agency.
