Hyacinth Tucker did someone else’s laundry for the first time in 2022 during a rough financial patch when a friend wished for a fairy godmother to gather up and do her laundry. Now it has grown into a going concern - the Laundry Basket. Within two years, she and her staff were washing up to 7,000lb of laundry a month, and partnering with a Baltimore-based outreach organization to launder donated clothing before it’s distributed to shelters. Today she manages a staff of three. The Laundry Basket takes on high school interns - she’s trained five so far - and trains people interested in kickstarting their own careers including those who may face barriers. Tucker, who has expanded into dry cleaning and alteration services and is working with a chemist to formulate a branded detergent, hopes to transition toward a franchise model, with operations nationwide.
